Pressure Washing After a Flood or Severe Storm

You're returning to your home after it has been hit by a flood or severe storm. First, take all safety precautions. Before going into any wet area of your home ensure the electricity is switched off, and that all electrical wires and outlets are safe. If the mains switch was left on or if any electrical wiring has been damaged, contact your electricity supplier to ensure the house is disconnected before you enter it.  If water has been through the house, do not attempt to use any electrical outlet until it has been given the all clear by an electrician.

Once inside your property, check for dead or injured wildlife that may have been flushed out. Snakes, rodents, possums and other creatures would need to be removed.

For insurance purposes you should keep a record of the damage. Photographs are helpful for this. Then the clean-up can begin.

Even in rural areas flood waters carry mud, silt, vegetation, manure and debris. In urban areas it is worse as human waste, rubbish, chemicals and other contaminants add to the mess. If your home has been affected by sewage a radical and thorough clean-up is required, with disinfection. If mould appears after the clean-up, further professional advice should be sought.

Once you have cleared out the mud, the water and all damaged items and have washed, dried-out and ventilated the inside of your home, you can reassess the outside walls. At this point pressure washing with the right ingredients can work a miracle in terms of restoring your sense of "Home" and the safety, security, health and wellbeing that your home represents.

The video above this page gives advice on the types and amounts of detergent and bleach etc that are likely to be most effective for your situation, depending on the state of your house after the flood or storm.
